To the Chief
—Albert Mohler
The confirmation of Judge John G. Roberts as the 17th chief justice of the United States is an historic event in the life of the nation. After all, there have only been three chief justices in the last half-century, and Chief Justice Roberts can be expected to serve well into the twenty-first century.
Americans came to know John Roberts through the televised Senate hearings. They saw a man who called for a humble judiciary, who spoke with the seasoned assurance of legal scholarship, and who clearly loves his country, the Constitution and the rule of law.
Americans liked what they saw, and there is great support for our new chief justice as he assumes his high office. The rule of law is an achievement that must be protected by constant vigilance and respect. Now is a good time for Americans to pray for the Supreme Court and its new leader.
